Reflection
When I look back on my performance during this unit, I think that I did rather well. I utilized the skills I learned from the last experience and had much more pleasant encounters with my new group. My group divided up work well, and no one was ever too flustered by the work load. During this unit, the biggest point that I think was made is that research is important. Before trying to find a solution to any problem, you must first become educated about what you are trying to resolve. Another aspect of this project that I enjoyed was the level of independence we were given.
Some things that went well in my group were the level of communication we had and the distribution of work. While Leo and I worked on the filter prototype, Shasta and Sarah worked on the presentation. Dividing the work like this ensured that we would do the same amount of work which is very important to me. Equal division of labor makes sure nobody is slacking off and taking excess credit. Communication also went well. After taking notes on water filtration, I shared the most common methods used today and after taking notes on where water was needed and the importance of clean water, my colleagues shared their notes. With my improved communication skills, I believe that we were able to make sure we all agreed on what we were doing and that we were able to do diligent work.
A couple things that I think could have gone better were time use as well as practicing our presentation as a group more. By the end of the project, my group and I were rushing to make sure our filter was working correctly and were trying to get our presentation as smooth as it could have been. If we had spent more time practicing our presentation, it would have been much more unwrinkled. When it comes to using our time more wisely, instead of talking after finishing our task, we could have made a more polished transition to another one.
For the most part my group worked well and I am proud of our final product. Work division was even and arguments barely occurred. But, we could have utilized our time better, and working on the presentation a little more could not have hurt. I learned a lot about the importance of research, and I look forward to the rest of my time at high school if it goes like this first semester did!
